022. Do You Still Believe in the School of Hard Knocks? Get Over It!

Give the Gift of WHY & Access to Economic Forecast Webinar included too

It’s time for another brainy update! And I’m once again debunking another one of those not-so-effective-anymore management myths. This week, I’m challenging the old 'School of Hard Knocks' School of Management. Let's dive into why smarts, not just guts, are the new key to productivity and success.

The Guts vs. Brains Debate

In the business world, there's a long-standing belief that sheer willpower and endurance are the tickets to the top. It's the gutsy, tough-it-out attitude that's been glorified. However, neuroscience is flipping this script, showing us that understanding the brain is crucial for real success.

Now before your brain blows a gasket, let me assure you I’m not advocating that everyone deserves an “A” for effort and that success doesn’t take hard work. Nothing could be farther than the truth. Learning and unlearning new skills is hard work. It takes grit, resilience, and lots of practice. What I am suggesting is that in today’s Never Normal world, experiences and skills have a very short half-life and we need to look at education, training, and development differently.

The chorus of managers bellowing out “it took me years for me to get where I am” may be absolutely accurate and true. It’s just no longer realistic or relevant. By the time students are ready to graduate from “Hard Knocks,” their diplomas have an expired date on it. The “curriculum” at Hard Knocks today must be an accelerated and dynamic program.

Welcome to the new world where the brain's secrets are unlocking new, less bruising paths to success!"

The Myth of Hard Knocks:

Traditionally, it's been believed that enduring hardships is essential for personal growth and success. This 'no pain, no gain' philosophy has been the cornerstone of many motivational speeches. But, enter neuroscience, stage left, with a compelling counter-argument.

The Brain on Learning:

Neuroscience shows us that our brains are not just sponges soaking up lessons from tough experiences. Rather, they're complex networks that respond differently to stress and comfort. While overcoming challenges can indeed foster resilience, excessive stress hampers learning. The brain prefers a Goldilocks zone – not too easy, not too hard.

Unlearning for Success:

While continuously learning new skills is imperative, so is unlearning old ones.  But let me perfectly clear. Our brains don’t have a delete button and we can’t just empty the trash bin. (But wouldn’t that be nice!) What we can do is create new neural pathways that supersede and smother the old ones. That’s what we call neuroplasticity and it works best in environments that balance challenge with support. Excessive hardships can lead to a 'fight or flight' response, which is great for survival but not for learning new skills or creative problem-solving.

A Few Practical Takeaways

  • Rethink the Work Environment: Encourage a culture that balances challenge with support. It's not about removing all stress, but about not drowning in it.

  • Invest in Brain Health: Mental health and mindfulness aren’t just wellness trends; they’re business strategies that can boost brain performance and human brain capital. More on this last week’s issue.

  • Foster Creative Thinking: A positive and psychologically safe environment is a fertile ground for growth and innovation – crucial in the fast-paced business world.

Conclusion

As neuroscience continues to unveil the mysteries of the brain, it's becoming clear that the road to success doesn't always have to be paved with pain and hardships. By understanding and nurturing our brains, we might just find that the journey to achievement can be more humane and less jarring. So, maybe it's time to transfer from the school of hard knocks and enroll in the university of smart knocks!"
